Meet Our Teachers

Joanne Frederick is a Registered Psychologist who has worked with individuals, groups and organizations in a variety of roles since 1987. With a solid and unique combination of skills, training and experience, Joanne established a private practice in order to focus on providing much needed services and support in her home community and beyond. Her work is guided by a passion for helping people find sustainable solutions to life challenges using a mindfulness-based approach.

A cancer diagnosis in 2003 dramatically changed the course and purpose of her life. Since that time, Joanne discovered mindfulness and has developed a passion for working with others to truly awakening to life rather than operating on auto-pilot.

The concept of mindfulness is at the core of Joanne’s work with people. She has completed the intensive requirements to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) through the Center for Mindfulness (CFM), University of Massachusetts Medical School. MBSR is an evidence-based program that combines meditation and gentle yoga as tools in learning how to use mind and body to do what no one else can do for you: take charge of your health and feel more in control of your life. It is the gold standard of mindfulness-based programs.

Joanne Frederick, Founder, Prairie Centre for Mindfulness.

As one of only two professionals in Saskatchewan who have completed training through the CFM, Joanne founded Prairie Centre for Mindfulness as a way to offer individuals, groups and a wide range of businesses, organizations and teams learn about the benefits of integrating mindfulness into their lives. She is a dynamic teacher and presenter who blends her knowledge, skills, wisdom and experience with equal parts of warmth, humour and compassion.

Joanne is an active member of a number of professional organizations. She also volunteers her personal and professional time in an effort to contribute and give back to her community. Below is a list of the organizations in which she is involved:

Bonnie offers an evidence-based Children and Youth Mindfulness Program for children ages 7-12 that is overseen by representatives of the University of Glasgow, University of Edinburgh, Gartnavel Royal Hospital, and the former Chief Social Work Inspector for Scotland. This unique program incorporates art, creativity, practice, enquiry, movement, videos, and fun to reinforce the children’s mindfulness concepts. Sixteen one-hour lessons build up sequentially, introducing and exploring new facets of mindfulness. The lessons cover the 8 themes of intention, attention, attitude, gratitude, resilience, self-kindness, kindness to others, and purpose. Importantly, the key foundations of mindfulness - paying attention to the present moment with openness, curiosity and warmth - are strengthened throughout all 16 lessons enabling children to develop their innate capacities of awareness, resilience and compassion.

  • 92% of children report an enhanced ability to regulate their emotions.

  • 72% of children report that mindfulness helps them to focus and concentrate.

  • 72% of children report an enhanced ability to be less reactive towards others, less aggressive, and engage less frequently in physical and verbal confrontation.

  • 77% of children report improvements in peer and family relationships.

  • 55% of children report that they enjoy life more, demonstrating enhanced gratitude, happiness, optimism and quality of life.
