Training Programs for Companies, Organizations and Schools
Training Programs for Companies, Organizations and Schools – mindfulness has become integrated into a variety of health care, work place and educational settings. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is currently offered in over 740 hospitals, clinics, and health centres worldwide.
During the past several years, a growing number of companies have discovered the advantages of offering their employees a chance to learn about mindfulness, including Google, Facebook, eBay, Twitter and Ford Motor Company. The benefits of MBSR are becoming increasingly apparent to employers and corporations as stress-related employee absenteeism, corresponding health care costs, continue to steadily increase.
Prairie Centre for Mindfulness offers professional trainings in a wide range of settings. To find out how mindfulness could be of benefit to you, your patients, employees or team, contact Joanne to arrange a consultation.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was developed in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the Center for Mindfulness, University of Massachusetts Medical School. It is an intensive 8-week, 9-session training in mindfulness. Groups meet weekly for 2.5 to 3 hours and for an all-day session between weeks six and seven. In each class, participants are provided with instruction in various mindfulness practices, including sitting and walking meditation, gentle yoga, and other guided meditations. Information about the human stress response and how high levels of stress can contribute to exhaustion and illness will be offered. In addition, there is time in each class for group discussion. It is important to note that participants will be asked to use the mindfulness practices on a daily basis between classes.
The practices are learned together as a group, creating an immediate sense of community and trust. Participants are also given the opportunity to practice these techniques at home and given the opportunity to talk about their experiences with the mindfulness techniques. Class size ranges from 8 to 12 people.
Completing an MBSR course is a transformative experience that has enabled many people to become active participants in their own health, well-being and ultimately to awaken to their own lives. It is not group therapy; rather, an opportunity to awaken your inner capacity and infuse your life with awareness.
Based on over 30 years of research, there is substantial evidence that mindfulness helps restore and maintain a sense of personal balance, thus helping people to avoid emotional and physical depletion. This is important not only for people with stress-related, mental health, and chronic illness but also for those who want to avoid such struggles. The majority of people who complete the eight-week course report:
lasting decreases in symptoms of physical and emotional discomfort
an increased ability to relax and enjoy life
enriched relationships with self and others
greater energy and enthusiasm for life
better quality of sleep
an ability to cope more effectively with stressful situations
